Pre, post, or rest day?

Our honest take on timing your massage

One of the most common questions we get is  “Should I come in before or after I train?”

It’s a good question. And the honest answer is… it depends.
It comes down to the type of massage you’re getting and what you’re asking your body to do.

Here’s a simple way to think about it.

Q: Can I train on the same day as a massage?

After deep remedial work, your muscles need time to respond. Training hard on the same day works against the session.

If you can, book your massage on a rest day, or after training rather than before.

Lighter recovery massage is more flexible and can sit alongside training more easily.

Q: Should I get a massage before or after a big event?

Before:
Lighter, more activating work in the days leading in is great. Avoid deep tissue within 48 hours of competing, if it’s not part of your regular routine.

After:
This is where massage really earns its keep. Post-event work helps manage inflammation and gets you back to training sooner.

Q: How long before I can train hard after a remedial massage?

Allow 24 to 48 hours.

Your body is responding to the work, so give it space to adapt. Light movement in the meantime is completely fine and often helpful.

Q: What type of massage is best after training?

A lighter recovery massage helps keep circulation moving and prevents tension from settling in.

For deeper structural work, tightness, adhesions, or injury, a dedicated remedial session on a recovery day will be more effective and more comfortable.

Q: How does massage fit into a regular training week?

Think of your body like a car. You don’t wait until it breaks down to take it in for a service. You stay on top of it so it keeps running well.

Massage works the same way. A fortnightly or monthly remedial session helps manage the build up of tension before it turns into something bigger.

Then lighter, recovery style work can slot in more regularly alongside your training, especially during heavier weeks.

The people who get the most out of it don’t treat massage as a reward. They treat it like sleep or nutrition. It becomes part of the routine that keeps them training consistently, feeling good, and avoiding those forced breaks when something tight turns into something painful.

Q: I feel sore the day after a massage. Is that normal?

Yes.

Deep work creates a response in the muscle tissue, similar to training soreness. It usually settles within 24 to 48 hours.

Hydrate well, keep moving lightly, and if soreness feels excessive or lingers beyond a couple of days, let us know. Your therapist can adjust your next session.

Not sure how to fit massage into your training?

Book a session and chat it through with your therapist. We’ll help you find what makes sense for how you train and what you’re working towards.
